The Physics of Elementary Particles and Atomic Nuclei, Letters journal has been published by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research since 1984 (it was called Brief Communications of JINR until 2000).

The journal publishes articles with results of the original theoretical, experimental, scientific-technical, methodical, and applied research. Subject-matter of the articles covers the research fields at JINR, namely theoretical physics, elementary particle physics, relativistic nuclear physics, nuclear physics and related problems in other branches of physics, neutron physics, condensed matter physics, low temperature physics and cryogenic technology, physics and technique of accelerators, methods of physical experiment, computer technologies in physics, applied research in these branches of physics, including radiology, ecology, and nuclear medicine.

The Physics of Particles and Nuclei, Letters journal publishes articles in both Russian and English.

The journal is issued   6 times a year. Since 2007, additional issues have been published by the decision of the editorial board.

The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is the journal’s founder. The journal has been registered with the Ministry of Press, Broadcasting, and Mass Media of the Russian Federation.

The journal is included into the list of peer-reviewed scientific publications of the Higher Attestation Commission of Russia recommended for the publication of articles containing materials of candidate's and doctoral dissertations.

Since 2004, MAIK Nauka/Interperiodica has been translating and publishing an English version of Physics of Particles and Nuclei, Letters.
